I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs.Cruse. I have many fond memories of our times together and was very fortunate to have had her touch my heart with her kindness and care. She was always smiling and had a twinkle in her eyes and her laugh was infectious! I remember sitting at her kitchen table learning to play euchre and listening to the adventures that both Mr. and Mrs. Cruse had. We had many laughs together and I was fortunate to eventually have her as my Grade 8 teacher at Dr. Hawkins school. She was a dedicated teacher who brought out and demanded the best in her students. Please know what a very well thought of woman she was! The skies will shine brighter in the nights to come.

Aunt Beryl and Uncle Maurice took me with them on the roadtrip of a lifetime to and from Vancouver, BC in '68. We went despite what had to be a most painful injury Beryl had just suffered to one of her fingers. I so appreciate her loving dedication. And then BERMAURIN, the sound of Beryl's laugh, the cackling of the aunties playing euchre at Christmas, the beautiful roses and turkey dinners. Maurice's sister and my Mom Gloria Philp, my brothers and I take ease in knowing that for most of her life Beryl enjoyed the freedom of glowing good health and creativity, much much love, Paula Philp

I send my deepest condolences to the family of Mrs. Cruse. She was my music teacher in the mid 70's at Dr. Hawkins. She was tough but caring and just wanted you to learn. I can still play the recorder but not the ukele.
About 30 years later we would meet up again at a neighbours house on Wednesday nights for cards & she wanted me to call her Beryl. I said I couldn't, that she would always be Mrs. Cruse. I would imitate one of the players when she left the table to inform the rest of the players her mouth gestures when she was ready to discard & win the game. Well I think Mrs. Cruse had the biggest laugh when the game started again & she witnessed what I was talking about. She asked if I imitated her when she left the table & I promptly said no! She laughed even harder when I told her that I didn't have a wooden pointer to "crack " over any knuckles! She knew exactly what I was talking about! We would all have sore stomachs from laughing about recalling some of the mischievious students that thought they could push her around until the pointer hit the desk or the knuckles. You were a very caring teacher. May you rest in peace Mrs. Cruse.
Sincerely
Cathy Dey

The Grandy's send their condolences to Beryl's family and close friends. I was so fortunate to have her as music teacher in Grade 8 at Dr. Hawkins. She allowed me to sing a solo once in the wonderful school choir she conducted (with Dora Dent or Mr. Morrow on the piano). If memory serves, I accompanied the choir once as well. She greatly encouraged me in my piano studies, even allowing me to stay in her classroom after school was over, to practice my piano scales and pieces, since my weekly lessons were basically around the corner from the school, and I did not live close by. I know she had to get special permission for this. Later in life, as we occasionally crossed paths, she was so happy to hear that I had continued my music studies and was thrilled I was playing the organ for church, as she did for many many years as well.
The last time I talked to her, so briefly as I now remember, was I believe at the old A&P store, where she was sitting as a Salvation Army volunteer accepting donations. Now I wish I had spent more time chatting with her and reminiscing, but it wasn't the time nor the place.
Beryl, you worked us hard as students, but the results were evident, especially in the numerous choir "wins" at Kiwanis Festivals over your years as music teacher.
"Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May she rest in peace."

Our sincere condolences to Beryl's family. We have fond memories of her-- dating back many years.
Chester remembers her working on his family's tobacco farm in the summer when she was a teenager!
Beryl was my Sunday School teacher, choir leader and "Young People's group" leader as well, at Garden Hill United Church.
She hosted a bridal shower for me and sang at our wedding (she had a lovely voice).
We enjoyed our friendship with she and Maurice for many years.
With sincere sympathy,
Chester and Diane (Scott) Froncz

My sincere condolences to Mrs Cruse’s family and close friends on her passing. I was fortunate to be in her home room in grade 8 at Dr Hawkins, and participated in her school choir. I still remember singing “Michelle, ma belle
Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble
Tres bien ensemble”. I’ve never forgotten it.
She was also a member of the same United Church charge as our family ( Welcome, Canton, Garden Hill) so I would cross paths with her over the years.
How wonderful that she lived such a long life.

My deepest sympathies, I thank you, Beryl, for sharing the love of music with me. I still love to sing, whenever I can, to this day.
You were tough and I appreciated everything you did through your tenure, I'm sure I'm not alone in my thoughts. Rest well, Beryl, it's well deserved.

Mrs. Cruse was a wonderfully tough and caring teacher. So many memories of the huge choir that she recruited each year. She was amazing and dedicated, and definitely one of the most positively influential teachers I ever had.
I have thought of her often over the years.
Nobody could teach grammar like Mrs. Cruse!! (Thank you for that!)

Mrs. Cruse was my grade 8 teacher at Dr. Hawkins School. She was tough but cared so much - she prepared me for high school. I always remember Mrs. Cruse taking us to Ottawa for our grade 8 trip. Her husband drove the bus for us. My mom was a chaperone. We had such fun - I decided to go to University there. I stayed in touch, coming back to visit her often throughout high school. She gave me a wedding present when I married. Things came full circle when she was living at Rosewood when my mom lived there. She was a special teacher that influenced my life. God bless!!

Everyone in class was certainly aware when Mrs. Cruse was teaching, to say she was “by-the-book” is an understatement. She went the extra mile to help each and everyone of her students. At times it was a “little scary” to be in class. She was a fantastic teacher and set examples for the students in class to emulate. I certainly have the greatest respect for one of the best teachers I ever had.
