Dear Susan and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dennis' passing. He was a mentor to me early in my career at Foreign Affairs both when I served in his division at headquarters and when we were both in the field in the Balkans - he in Croatia and me in Kosovo. He was such a terrific person, down to earth, kind, funny, insightful with always a story to tell. During our morning divisional coffee breaks it wasn't unusual for our conversation to drift to baseball or hockey, passions that he and I both shared. Dennis was always there to offer encouragement and praise, important for an inexperienced junior officer. I remember him coming to me one spring morning and telling me he wanted to send me to New York for a two-week assignment on a UN panel. I thought at the time that this was a pretty tall order for someone with only a few years experience under his belt. "Are you sure I'm senior enough for this? You think I'm ready?" I asked him. "You'll do a great job!" he said. That was typical Dennis. I'm retired now but when I look back over my career I can truly say that Dennis was one of the most generous, genuine and memorable of my foreign service colleagues. RIP Dennis Snider.

Dear Susan and family,
Deepest condolences from Louise, Dusko, Tom and Nicky Doder. We have such wonderful memories of Dennis — and of the Susan and Dennis wonder team — from when we were all in Belgrade in the 1990s, from our visits to you in Canada, from your visits to us in Washington and to Louise’s parents in the UK. Dennis was a true mensch and will be always in our hearts. With love and deep sadness.

Susan and family…my heartfelt condolences to you during this most difficult time following the loss of Dennis. Such a beautiful tribute to him and the life you shared together. In time I hope those memories will comfort you. Unfortunately I will be unable to attend the celebration of his life, as I am out of the country. May he now rest in peace.

Dear Susan and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dennis passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I had the fortune of working for Dennis when he was Ambassador to Croatia. He was a great man and I was proud to call him Ambassador. He represented Canada with integrity, wisdom and humility and treated his staff with kindness and respect. You and Dennis were a great team. I am especially grateful for the consular assistance he offered to my uncle when Dennis was a young Consular officer, many years before I met him. I guess fate brought us together after so many years. Canada and the Embassy were fortunate to have him. May he rest in peace.

When I returned to Canada from my first posting in Iran after a few months at ICER the infamous Interdepartmental Committee on External Relations I was ushered to the Eastern European division headed by wonderful Chuck Marshall with Dennis as deputy director! He taught me everything I needed to know about an area I knew nothing other than crossing the countries by car from Brussels to Tehran!
A warm, caring, knowledgeable character!
Thanks Dennis for being my « professor » in Eastern European affairs!
I left after less than a year to handle Canada France relations! A much tougher assignment!
RIP

Dear Susan and family,
I was very sorry to learn today that Denis had passed away. I was not aware of his illness and it must be four or five years or more since we last communicated. We had discovered that in fact we had the same ancestry through the Sniders as my grandmother was a Snider. Denis joined then External Affairs the year after I did and we remained in touch over our years together in the Deoartnent. I recall his forthright manner of calling "a spade a spade". He retired well before I did and was certainly missed around Headquarters. My deepest condolences on your loss.

It is still hard to believe that Dennis is no longer with us. Don will definitely miss his bridge partner, and I will really miss beating the two of them with your help, Susan. I am sure we were up a game or two.
Anyway, I’m sorry we never had a chance to have a face to face game just the four of us. I knew of some of his travels, but it would have been nice to understand his perspective of what’s happening in the world today.
Please let us know if we can help in any way.
