John was a wonderful, caring man with whom I enjoyed running into on many occasions over the years since our families have known each other for so long. I remember him like many others do through baseball, hockey, and babysitting Devon and Bobby, but I especially remember him picking my bridesmaids and I up for my wedding in his limo. It was a lot of fun that day having him as the driver. We had a good laugh when I spilled the champagne on my wedding dress in your limo and said I was glad I didn’t spill it on the car seat:) Sincerest condolences to Valerie, Devon, Bobby and family. May you find comfort in the stories that your family and friends are sharing with you and treasure the memories that you made together always. He will be greatly missed. Sincerely, Sheila (Hackett) Pendleton

I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Witheridge's passing, (I still have a hard time calling him John). His dynamic personality made for an enjoyable, memorable year as my grade 6 teacher at Orono Public School. Later we crossed paths again as teachers in the KPR school board. He would always take time to chat and was genuinely interested in catching up on the latest news. He was truly one-of-a-kind who had a positive impact on so many people. I wish Val, Devon and Bobby peace and comfort at this time. You are in my thoughts. Kathy (Zych) Mastroianni

It is so sad to lose John Witheridge. He lived a responsible and kind life always giving back. He was a natural born teacher and leader. I may be biased but I can't think of another person-type to be a better elementary school teacher than the "John Witheridge" type! I extend my heartfelt condolences to everyone on this very sad loss

We didn't know John well apart from Duplicate Bridge in Port Hope. His humour and light heartedness cheered everyone he played with so we didn't take ourselves too seriously. I loved the twinke in his eye whether he made a successful finesse or you did. A real gentleman. He will be missed by all.

I had the privilege of being a student of Mr. Witheridge’s at Lockhart Public School for both grade four and five many years ago. He was kind, funny and genuine. I remember he had us all doing jobs around the classroom. My favourite was to organize his desk before it got too cluttered! He guided us through our first attempts at public speeches (the cue cards were key!), introduced us to the lifelong skill of cursive writing (fountain pens were recommended) and got us through long division…all with grace and good humour. Much later I would bump into him at school again as teaching colleagues and it was always nice to catch up. Sending my condolences to his family and thinking of you at this difficult time. Sincerely, Jenny ten Westeneind

My condolences to all of John's family. I met John when my daughter was in grade 6 at Hampton Jr. Although retired, he came in to supply teach Nancy Martin's class every Friday (as she worked only 4 days that year). He was quite the character and loved nothing more than to create humour in the classroom. I remember going on the grade six camping trip at Ganaraska that year and helping the boys play some pranks on him through the night. He was such a good sport about it too. Over the years I would often bump into him at the Fisherman's restaurant as he had his weekly breakfast with "the boys". The last time was just before Christmas. RIP John.

I would like to express my condolences to John’s family and his brothers David and Donny and sister Barb.As the older brother in the Witheridge family he was a voice of reason that I remember commanded respect.
John was one of many ‘older brothers’ in what were larger families in the tight knit neighborhood of Strathcona Park …many of whom have regrettably passed on. A sad day for his family, his siblings and those who knew him.
My thoughts are with you.

John was a dear friend who always made you feel comfortable to be with. John and I became good friends and teammates as we taught together and played hockey and ball together. I remember the time we sat in John and Val's living room watching the Argos win the Grey Cup. John was famous for playing jokes on people too. One time he had me totally believing he was a town building inspector wanting to see my building permit for work I was doing on my house. When he was playing first base, he would often call "time" to retie his shoe so we could have time to breathe. We spent many days travelling in his van to various Ontario towns to play baseball. He was a big part of our sports family and I will never forget that. May he Rest in Peace.
My thoughts and prayers are also with Val and the kids.
Take care my friend. We will meet again on another ball field.

To John's Family,
I am very sorry to hear of John's passing. I had him as a teacher when I was young and then we reunited at the Newcastle Golf Course where I worked, we would frequently pull our carts up beside each other and sit in the sun talking about his love of golf or how I was doing in college. After I left the golf course we would frequently run into each other on the streets of Port Hope. He would always greet me with a large smile and a cheerful hello. He was always a joy to be around. I am deeply sorry for your loss. John left a large impact and his generosity will be missed.

Condolences to Valerie, Devon and Bob. John could light up a room with his laughter, stories and smiles. He was quick to give accolades and to recognize a good effort. His long stretch at first base ruined many good hits from the visiting lob ball team. John was M.C. for the Orono parade and gave colourful comments as the floats, antique cars and bikes moved in front of the grandstand. He quietly showed his love and respect for family and friends. He will be remembered fondly and often.
