Obituary of John Lennon

John “The Scarf” Lennon March 21^st 1937 -September 10^th 2022

John was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland on March 21st, 1937 - an equally proud Scotsman and Irishman who had family roots that traced from both Galway and Connemara, Ireland and Kilmarnock, Scotland.

John started his humble but adventurous life alongside his mother, a shopkeeper, and his father, a coal miner. He also had one sibling named James who unfortunately passed away at a young age.

John was a strong, courageous, and daring man, with stories from his times as a teenager in the British Army where he was posted all over the world, specifically in Egypt, and Cyprus.

John was a one man show until he found his beautiful Mattie, the woman who he would say changed his world for the better. With his desire to explore the world not fulfilled, John made the voyage across the big blue sea to come to Canada in the 1960’s.

The pair decided to remain in Canada.  With his travel bug subsided, John quickly became part of the Irish Scottish scene in Toronto working part time at the Windsor House and the Locarno Ballroom all while working at his trade as a brick layer. He also was involved in the early days of the founding of the Toronto Celtic Supporter’s Club #1 Branch.

In the 70’s John became a millwright and worked for a variety of companies, but the wild spirit of travel came back. In the 1980’s he and Mattie moved to Turks and Caicos to commence a water filtration business and he became a scuba diver instructor – which may have led to a few movie roles.

In the mid-90’s John and Mattie decided to return to Canada as Mattie became unwell and they settled in Port Hope area and he returned to work at Toronto Hydro as a Health and Safety Training Instructor.

Unfortunately, Mattie lost the battle to cancer and passed away in 2014.

John’s passion and dedication continued with his work with the Knights of Columbus and until his passing still held the role of Faithful Navigator and his commitment to his faith remained unfaltering.

Around this time, John and a few close friends opted to host a mass at the annual Celtic Convention in Las Vegas, which flourished due John’s unwavering commitment to both his beloved Celtic Football and his deep-rooted Catholic faith.  The mass is now an integral part the NAFCSC.

John’s deep-rooted faith prompted John to always pay it forward

John was well loved within various communities he was part of from the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, The Kano Foundation, Mary’s Meals and of course his beloved Celtic Family.

His uncanny ability to welcome people into his circle was a natural gift. And of course, never without the famous scarf wrapped around his neck.

John was well loved by many people, especially his beloved Mattie who he has now been reunited with.

Liverpool may have had the Beatles, but those that loved him, we had the real John Lennon.
